Jonathan Walton has just returned from a trip to Antarctica taking a pre Christmas sojourn where he was involved in measuring glaciers with Stuart Proctor of Topcon.

It?s amazing the lengths people go to show off their AiC Beanie Hats. We like the reflections in your glasses, Jonathan. Just like a real film star!

See our Free draw.

?The picture was taken at Patriot Hills which is part of the Ellsworth Mountain Range in Antarctica. This range includes Mt Vinson which is the highest mountain on the continent. A comprehensive survey of a ?blue ice? glacier was being carried out by myself and Stuart Proctor of Topcon to look at the suitability of this snow free surface for landing large aircraft on wheels. Such a "blue ice" runway is already in use at various other locations around the continent.

The survey was carried using Topcon GPS equipment working in Kinematic mode and all the results were computed on site using Topcon tools and n4ce. Site plans, long and cross sections were produced using n4ce while waiting in our small tents for the weather to clear. Time spent in Surveying - 4 days. Time spent waiting around in our tents after the survey was complete before we could get taken back to base camp - 7 days!?
